The AWA explicitly excludes rats, mice, reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds, and invertebrates, so these animals don’t have to be included in the school’s annual report that it submits to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). This ranking uses the 2023 USDA Annual Report, as well as those of previous years, to show trends and shed light on what happens behind closed doors at universities across the country.
